South Island Photography During COVID

Traveling the South Island after NZ came out of lock-down was an interesting experience – and a positive one (see Recent Images). As an ‘obsessional’ photographer I had been keen to get some of the shots on my ‘list’ without the usual clamour of tourists in those beautiful but popular places. Well – the roads were largely empty, and although there were one or two camper vans to be seen, most places were pretty much devoid of the usual overseas tourists. This meant one could enjoy the ‘solitude’ of the experience (eg see Peters Pool, Lake Matheson or Lake Pukaki images) as well as capture good photographs. Being in beautiful peaceful places, with no-one else around, is truly a special and ‘connected’ experience – don’t you think?

So – COVID, with its major impacts on tourism, does have its upside if you are a New Zealander keen to rediscover your country. Over the course of 3-4 weeks I was able to capture the images you see in the Recent Images Gallery. There is no excuse – visit our beautiful places and our small towns!
